Have you ever had a period in your life that felt like everything was going along for better or worse until - bam! - you were suddenly, and very solidly, on an entirely new course? Take a look back - the shift may have been facilitated by the powerful, transformational energy of an eclipse.
You have no doubt been hearing about eclipses lately and, if not, you will. They get almost as much press as Mercury Retrograde (which we are also experiencing until June 22). Yet rather than fear-based fascination, modern eclipses are viewed with awe and revelation. As a quick refresher, there are two types: solar and lunar. And each can be partial or total. During a solar eclipse, the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun blocking the Sun’s light from Earth. During a lunar eclipse, the Moon moves into the Earth’s shadow, thereby blocking the Moon from reflecting the Sun’s light. We experience two eclipse seasons per year approximately six months apart, roughly correlated with the Winter and Summer Solstices.
Both solar and lunar eclipses strip light from the sky and thrust the Earth into a temporary, eerie darkness that affects the energy and behavior of nearly all living things on the planet. Modern humans leave the confines of our offices and homes to gaze up at the sky in awe, while other animals’ day-night activities are altered by the change in light. It’s easy to understand why the Ancients feared eclipses and interpreted their darkness as impending doom. And when I examine my own life, I can see the parallels.
Looking back, summers have traditionally been difficult and emotionally charged for me (being a Cancer only intensifies it). But understanding the influence of eclipse energy has given new meaning to the season. I am able to grasp the inherent transformation of moves, breakups, job changes, etc. that almost always seem to happen this time of year. What feels like a sudden shift off track is actually a realignment toward my purpose.
This season, acknowledge your intuitive impulses and pay attention to the timing. As we approach the New Moon eclipse in Gemini on June 10, you may notice new ideas or other intellectual pursuits bubbling to the surface, but while still under the influence of Mercury Retrograde it is wise to let that simmer until the Full Moon in Gemini six months from now.
The sun will enter Cancer on the Summer Solstice June 20, bolstering the year’s highest energy point with nurturing and supportive energy. This is the time to come together, to breathe life into what may have been a dark year, and move forward with transformative intention. A summer potluck around the Full Moon in Capricorn on June 24 is the perfect way to shine your light and celebrate the season with family, friends, and lots of comfort food.
